In The Beginning...

Mya was born to an Italian mother and an African American father on October 10, 1979 in Washinton D.C. She started dancing at the age of two when she danced in the swimming pool between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln memorial. By the age of eight she had lost interest in dancing. But she still had a passion for music. She played the violin and also had violin lessions in the fourth grade. |
In 1992 she watched video's of herself dancing and that brung back her interest in it. She studied alot of Savion Glover dance tapes and had help with dancing. Soon after that she joined the T.W.A (Tappers With Attitude). She then went to New York City to practice with Glover at the fabled Dance Theater in Harlem. Glover was impressed by her talent. She was so good she earned a solo spot at the Kennedy Center performance. She taught other kids how to dance since she was fourteen.
Mya's father liked her dancing but he also noticed that she could sing very well. So he became dedicated in helping her pursuit her career as a singer. He helped her record some demo tapes and helped her improve her voice. He too her tape to a club and let the CEO of University music, Haqq Islam hear it. Islam then rwent to see Mya to see if her voice was as good in person. When he heard her in person. He immediately gave her a record deal. By then she had already finished high school.
In 1998 her selftitled album was released. It featured collaborations with Missy Elliot, Silkk the Shocker, Babyface, and Dru Hill. The album went platinum with the hits "Movin' On" ( With Silkk The Shocker of Nolimit), "My First Night With You" and "It's All About Me" (A duet with Sisqo' of Dru Hill). She also did some soundtracks. She did one with Pras and Ol' Dirty Bastard called "Ghetto Superstar" for the Bulworth soundtrack. She did another one with Blackstreet called "Take Me There" off the Rugrats soundtrack. These soundtracks alllowed her to establish herself in the music inductry.
Mya's second album named Fear Of Flying produced by Wyclef Jean, Jerry Duplessis, and collaborations with She'kspere and Kandi and Soulshock & Karli. Also songs with Beanie Man. This album to her emphasizes her growth in music and in life. This albums includes single "Free" & "Case of the Ex" & "The Best of Me"
Her Recent Album titled MOODRING collaborating with Pink, Missy Elliot, and Lloyd Banks was released in 2003. It includes the hit singles "Love Like Wo" & "Fallen".
Mya is a beautiful singer and dancer and even though she's around the age of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera she's found away to stand out and not loose sight of the R and B in R&B. She has a unique stlye that sets her apart. I don't know about you but I saw a bright past from Mya and I'm expecting a future so bright you'll need sunglasses. lol :-)
